Why I might put a deposit on a new Rivian: Introducing R2 and R3!

Rivian recently announced not one, but two (well, actually kind of three) new EV SUVs. At the moment, I’m really interested in one of them…

First let’s start with the R2.

Introducing Rivian R2

The new midsize Rivian R2 EV SUV looks promising. As a smaller version of the R1S and starting at a more attractive price, it makes a Rivian somewhat more accessible to consumers.

It will come with a standard NACS (Tesla charging network) charger.

In a smaller form factor, the R2 will not be as powerful or have the ability to tow or go offroad the way the R1S can, but this seems a minor sacrifice.

The R2 seems it will be more than capable to meet the needs of most drivers and scenarios.

But wait there’s more.

On the same day that Rivian announced the R2, they surprised the world and announced the R3. Their smallest EV SUV.

Introducing Rivian R3

The Rivian R3 is the EV I want! Here’s why:

  • A smaller form factor but still reportedly will have a 300+ mile range. Usually you’d need a bigger vehicle to hold a bigger battery (and thus more range).
  • Supposedly Rivian’s most affordable vehicle. The R2 was supposed to be the Rivian’s entry into a more accessible car but that went away in a day! There wasn’t an official price released so I’m both hopeful and skeptical here.
  • Similar features to the R2. One thing I’m really liking about Rivian is that they seem to care about quality and feature set across their entire lineup. The R3 and R2 seem similar in what they offer internally.
  • That design is awesome. It looks like a perfect size of functionality, sportiness, and nods to cars of the past.

The R3 seems like a great option for Michelle and I. We loved our Spark EV but wished it was bigger and had more range for road trips. The alternative has usually meant a bigger and way more expensive EV.

Rivian R3X

By the way, Rivian also announced a high-performance variant of the R3.

So what are my initial concerns?

No official price. We’re assuming it’s going to cost less than the R2 but they are waiting to make an official commitment to pricing.

No set delivery date. The R2 is slated to arrive in early 2026. Given the instability in the world, who knows if Rivian can deliver. That’s also 2 years away! If the R3 does happen, it will be 3-4 years from now.

I might put a deposit on a Rivian R3

So my dream is still a PHEV. I’d love an EV truck if I could afford one. But at the moment, when the reservation option becomes available, I just might be an early adopter for the R3.

In the past, deposits have been low barrier ($100) and refundable until you confirm an actual vehicle order.

What’s your take on Rivian’s latest announcement? Does the R2 or R3 interest you?
